SPECIAL NOTE: There is an "alternate" version of this week's
survey, with different positions below #17. On this "alternate"
survey, there are no #s 18, 19, or 20. ("Bits and Pieces," at
#18, is announced as #22; "Diane," at #19, is announced as #23,
and "Be My Girl," at #20, is announced as #24.) Lesley Gore is
#25, as opposed to #26. The Beach Boys are #26, not #21. Nat
"King" Cole is #26, not 27. Connie Francis is mentioned as both
#27 and #42, instead of #25! "Sugar and Spice" is #28, not 22.
Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells are #30, not 23. Bobby Vinton is #31,
instead of #24. Finally, Tracey Dey is announced as #55, not 28.
The general consensus about all of these discrepancies is that
they are completely inaccurate; speculation is that WABC may have
inadvertently printed an inaccurate in-studio reference list, and
then changed it when the mistakes were noticed. (The inaccurate,
or "alternate" numbers are announced by the DJs, except for Dan
Ingram, who reported the songs as they appear in order on the
normal list, which is believed to be accurate.) This is the first
big week of survey discrepancies since the surveys of spring 1963,
when different numbers were announced on the air over those listed
on the weekly printed store surveys.
