Somehow I'm reminded of an Ironic Times headline that read 'Singapore Ferry Arrives Safely -- No Incidents Reported'.
I gotta go with Bob on this one, Vic, for two reasons. 1) Way too many stations are overloading that '30' end. The most lucrative is 40-54 but the most desired is 30-40. 2) That '30' end of the prism is finding fewer and fewer '29's these days to replenish the cycle.
25 years ago, radio management decided to allow a 'return' of the pure Standards -- but not by blemishing the FM dial. Nossir. For the most part, MOYL wound up on picayune AM stations, directional and staticky and previously starving for an audience of any sort. Oldies will trudge along on the same cattle drive.
There are those who thoroughly believe that stubborn Infinity NYC will put Traditional Country on 101.1 before they admit that they couldn't handle their own Oldies audience sales-wise.
Unless Infinity NYC hauls in another music director of any 'name' from the Midwest or the Coast (and makes the maneuvre WORK this time), Scott Shannon remains the only known NYC luminary associated with Oldies formats -- and he doesn't work for Infinity. One can almost envision him burning the midnight Arbitron oil, idly humming along to the backdrop of a thousand-song Beach Boys playlist, and preparing to jump in -- instantly -- on October 18th if both WPLJ and 101.1 have shown another dip.
Seven days left until one of the most provocative NYC music-radio Books in ages.
