Al Kooper has a song on his new album, Black Coffee, entitled "Going, Going, Gone". Although the album came out just a few months ago, he wrote the song several years ago and has been performing it ever since.
I thought some of the lyrics (written by Kooper and Dan Penn) were particularly relevant and prescient. For those who are not familiar with these artists, Kooper was the musician who played the famous organ lick on "Like A Rolling Stone" (and was featured in the recent Martin Scorcese film about Dylan), was a member of the Blues Project, the founder of Blood, Sweat & Tears and he discovered and produced Lynard Skynard. Dan Penn wrote "Cry Like A Baby", "I'm Your Puppet", "Dark End of the Street" and many other great soul hits.
The song was triggered by Kooper's inability to find a new pair of his favorite boots.
Here's the middle section:
---------------------------------------
I used to fall in love to that deep soul music
It was the voices of the angels and they never told you no lies
Now you got pimps, ganstas, big time rappers
They made the whole damn thing disappear right before our eyes
Going, Going, Gone....
The things we took for granted
That we always counted on
And now you only hear that music,
on some oldies marathon
Pretty soon it won't even be there no more
Cause it's Going, Going, Gone...
------------------------------
And then there's also Shemekia Copeland's, "Who Stole My Radio". Both are themes for everyone on this Board.
