Actually it was Sue Thompson (Today, July 19th, is HER Birthday!) who had recorded the original version of the song, by June of 1952. Before Jo Stafford recorded it, it had been recorded by Patti Page, Dean Martin, and I think Joni James as well, all in the span of a couple of weeks. The Orioles also recorded it, but after Jo Stafford, released in November of 1952.
In October 1961, the Four Evers remade the then classic and released it in January 1962, though unsuccessfully. The Duprees version came along by July of 1962.
