DING DING DING DING DING! :-)
The song that Tina had covered was Buddy Holly's "Everyday", released on Coral Records which was also the label she'd been on at the time.
At a time when she was singing demos for the likes of Gerry Goffin, Carole King, Burt Bacharach and such, her assocition with Goffin and King provided her with a nostalgiac song looking into the recent musical past. Co-written with Howie Greenfield, it was her debut release on Mercury Records. "Play It Again" was alternately released as "Dear Mr. D.J. Play It Again", both on Mercury 71852, peaking in at #95 for just one week on September 18, 1961. A mysterious release on the Delta label (#105) titles the song as "Please Mr. D.J. (Play It Again)" and pairs it with a song by the Cadillacs "Hey-Bob-A-Re-Bob". This is clearly a bootleg release, as the composing credit for the song went to "Coban-Coban" and the audio fidelty is vastly inferior to the Mercury release.
A stereo version of the song can be found on the recent ACE CD release, EARLY GIRLS, Volume 5, the last in the series.
That's too bad, since another Tina Robin song, her final release (that I know of) on Mercury 72176, "It's Too Late Now", certainly deserves a spot in the series. Perhaps just one more?
Ronnie, would you happen to know Tina's whereabouts?
