Hi dudes and dudettes, Bob and Bobettes...It's time once again for our weekly foray into the bottom-dwellers of the Top 100 charts, the songs that we mostly barely knew as they tried to claw their way onto the hit list, or the ones that were giving one last gasp of air before falling off the list for good. It's time for the songs that were #100 on this day in history in the 60s and 70s.
And I must say, rarely have we had such a ho-hum list as we do this week if we go just by Billboard. In fact, the Billboard #100's are so weak that I also decided to delve into the Cash Box charts to supplement our usual list.
What, was everyone on vacation this week in August?...because the DOG days of August sure gave us some DOGS at #100.
"BB" are Billboard #100s. "CB" are Cash Box #100s.
1960 (BB) - How High the Moon - Ella Fitzgerald (A classic by a classic)
1960 (CB) - Devil or Angel - Bobby Vee
1961 (CB) - The Way You Look Tonight - The Lettermen (HA! What a coincidence. The very group I reviewed live last week as they chose not to do their hits in their entirety show up this week as a #100. Hmmm...Should we reject hearing their full version of this as THEY rejected performing it last week?)
1962 (BB) - Sweet Georgia Brown - The Carroll Brothers (The Harlem Globetrotters would surely pick this one!)
1962 (CB) - Sherry - The Four Seasons (In their very first week on the chart)
1963 (CB) - Betty in Bermudas - The Dovells (Come on gang, this one I GOTTA hear!)
1964 (BB) - A Taste of Honey - Tony Bennett (Tony covers the Beatles who covered a classic.)
1964 (CB) - Sincerely - The Four Seasons (Did you remember that they did this song?)
1966 (BB) - Rumors - The Syndicate of Sound (Hey, Little Girl, You Didn't Even KNOW They Had Another Song!)
1966 (CB) - Heartaches by the Number - Johnny Tillotson
1967 (BB) - Drums - Jon & Robin (Again, another group whom most of us only know from one song, "Do It Again Just a Little Bit Slower')
1967 (CB) - Knucklehead - The Bar-Kays
1969 (CB) - By the Time I Get to Phoenix - Isaac Hayes (No further comment on this coincidence is needed.)
1970 (BB) - As the Years Go By - Mashmakhan (WOW! I remember this one. Good song! Does anyone else know this?)
1970 (CB) - Border Song - Elton John (A little-known singer at the time with his first-ever chart entry.)
1972 (CB) - It's Too Late - Bill Deal and the Rhondells
1973 (BB) - In the Midnight Hour - Cross Country (I know the song...never heard of the group)
1974 (BB) - Billy Don't Be a Hero - Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods(Interestingly, down from #99 the week before on its way off the chart. Guess it was holding on for dear life until the very end!)
1974 (CB) - Love Is the Answer - Van McCoy
1977 (BB) - Luckenbach Texas - Waylon Jennings (In its last week on the chart, here's a song that spent 4 months on the survey and yet most people never even heard it! It only got to #25.)
1978 (BB) - Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton (Another one in its last week on the chart after a four month run)
Well, adding the Cash Box #100s helps to make it interesting, at least.
So then, it is now time to VOICE YOUR CHOICE and let Mr. Bob know which of THESE bottom-feeders you'd like to hear the most!
Mike
