Hi Andrea,
When I was deejaying back in the 80's, I had to buy the latest dance music along with the classic dance music. (disco, club, house etc.)
As you know, you had to have the standard group dance music (chicken, tarantella, macarina, etc.)
Along with that, you had to have a variety of music.
As far as oldies, guests at those parties would generally want to hear the popular oldies.
You got to remember the parties that I would DJ for were: sweet sixteens, birthdays, anniversarys, weddings, etc. not a specialized theme party like an oldies party.
Although, at one time I was planning one, but it never materialized.
So, as I was purchasing music for deejaying, at the same time I was also collecting my oldies from a national top 100 chart that I would use as a shopping list.
Like I posted before, it didn't matter what chart position the song was, I just bought music from various artist(s).
Most of the time I had never even heard of the song that I was buying... but I'm glad I did buy them because of the many good quality hidden hits that I would have never known existed.
Come on, you remember me waiting at the back of the record shop for Joe or Victor to forfill my list of oldies every week.
I couldn't wait to go home and play those oldies, especially the ones I never heard of.
