Like I said when I was younger 12 - 17, I bought music that I would hear regularily on the radio WABC, WMCA, etc.
Of course, if the song appealed to me after I heard it for the first time, I would purchase it.
Later on, I was a fan of FM, that's when my love of rock florished.
At about that time, I mainly started my Lp collection, by listening to what appealed to me mainly from FM radio.
As I got much older, I bought oldies by using a national chart as a shopping list of songs and artist(s).
I bought songs I probably would have never heard, and I'm glad I did.
