The mystery has been solved!
I just received this reply from the Sonny Curtis who was a former Cricket and wrote many hits and wrote and sang the legendary "Mary Tyler Moore Theme".

As to the 1953 record you mentioned, it's a different Sonny Curtis. I was in high school with no record deal. I never heard him sing, but I did see his picture on some sheet music once. I don't think he's as good lookin' as I am.
