The formula is, the song that's gotten the most spins across all radio stations since 1/1/08 is #1. Pretty simple. Station formats included classic hits/oldies, classic rock, active rock, AAA, urban AC, AC and "Jack"-type stations. Remaining formats skew too new to include these songs.

As I mentioned in a post under the Hendrix thread, the main reason Hendrix and the Doors fare so well is probably because Classic Rock stations rotate these songs very quickly so they get more plays there than your basic pop hit of '67 would at Oldies/Classic Hits. Whether or not you think that presents a bias is your call, I guess.
