He was great because he was more than just guitar.

An interesting story I read in the liner notes of the most recent CD version of "Are You Experienced?". I always thought "The Wind Cries Mary" was his best lyric, let alone its beautiful solo and so on. Well, apparently he crafted that song by writing maybe ten verses and only kept the ones he liked best in the end. Clever!

And "Fire" was inspired by a huge fireplace, he wanted to stand near it. Frank mentioned Mitch Mitchell, well on this song HE was on fire! So yes, the backup band mattered a lot too.
