The issue of how fast or slow charts are in different eras is fascinating. If you do top hits of different eras by points, the results will often be lopsided toward one period.
For example, if you did a chart of the 1950s by points, the early '50s records absolutely dwarf the late '50s records. Songs like Blue Tango, Because Of You, Cry/The Little White Cloud That Cried and Vaya Con Dios dominate the top of the chart. Mack The Knife, by far the biggest record of the late 1950s, won't even make the top 50 of the decade.
It's the reverse in the 1970s. The late-decade disco records hung around much longer than the big early '70s hits.
In the '80s, again it's the early part of the decade when records hung around longer.
