I don't think the station wants to go in an AC direction or have that kind of image. I recall pre-hijacking the majority of post 1980 music they would play would be schmaltzy ballads by Whitney Houston or Gloria Estefan.

Now that they are playing a lot late 70's and 80's music they are not afraid to shy away from songs which rock pretty hard (Magic Man, Harden My Heart, Hold the Line, You May be Right). If they want to go to the 80's and beyond they should add songs which have an "oldies/classic feel" For example "He's So Shy" by the Pointer Sisters, "Love Shack" or "Roam" by the B-52s, "Manic Monday" or "Hazy Shade of Winter" by the Bangles or Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" (which they played) all sound like updated girl group songs.

If they want to go into the 00's they could play other retro sounding songs like Santana/Michelle Branch's "Game of Love" or John Mayer's "No Such Thing". So you see it is often the sound rather than the year of release which is more significant.
