The more I listen to how well they're executing the format, the more convinced I am that they should probably *not* introduce specialty shows. It seems more important to assume that core listeners may want to tune in the station at any time and to keep the format rolling 24/7.
There's nothing wrong with popping in a good '50s song now and then, or having special days or weekends like this one. Or even identifying certain dayparts or weekend hours where the music could skew a little older, balanced by other times when it might skew more current. But if it were me, I wouldn't break the format for something entirely different very often.
I grew up in the late '50s and early '60s so I could claim stuff from that era to be "my music" but I think it's more fun to hear the songs as part of a bigger picture. Even people who would never go out of their way to attend an antique car show can't help but get a kick out of seeing a red and white '56 Chevy convertible drive down their street!
