Yeah, the same couple of experts nailed to the rote mantra taught in midwestern broadcasting schools.

I know what I heard on the street, and the split off of the 50's and 60's instead of using the beginning of rock & roll was the main thing brought up worded as lamenting the hole created by the missing 50's songs. WCBS-FM probably got the same indication by many contacting them with comments & suggestions. I imagine they are learning their unique market. I also imagine they are keen to be paying attention to what the sales staff is encountering with advertisers - and it may not be as cut&dried as experienced elsewhere.

As one expert below mentions, it was probably too soon so 'other stations will make old fogie comments' that they couldn't make with mid 60's beatles songs. Yes they're that bad at their job where they wouldn't think of this if it had a high percentage of occurring. If they simply never played a song pre '64, this expert would feel that's actually a viable decision - here in NY!.

This is not your typical american city. The people here in the NY area do not fit into these tired limited acceptance, average american location desires for a station like this.

The broadcasting teachers might have to adjust their droning on about greatest hits stations everywhere need to follow these average formulaic rules because advertisers firmly believe all people's age groups have the same buying trends everywhere blah blah blah.

So obviously some "idiot" must have made the decision to play automatically (no exceptions) old-fogie percieved 50's songs? Why such a continual positive response except from those few quoting the textbooks?

The NY area is a very special place with much stronger, unique, and open minded desires than the rest of the country. Its only one reason WCBS-FM is such a strong presence to actually return from an intensely cold numbers driven espected-success Jack station.

Really its not good to try to force fit this long hoped-for returned WCBS-FM into some formulaic average, cookie-cutter greatest hits station like the experts tried in 2002-2005 just because it always works in Racine, Wisconsin.

I believe they will eventually see that a couple of upbeat hoppin' 50's/early60's songs an hour throughout the week along with their newer bias and much larger playlist will be enjoyed by the younger people. Just like younger people shout on the street when a '56 chevy convertible drives by (as someone below said) and add the spice needed. It just fits along with why someone will want to just keep CBS on their dial automatically instead of Lyte-FM, or Q104 when turning on the car.

WCBS-FM is a station you feel like you're coming home to, not some averaged out science experiment.
