This is partly due to the fact that NY is different than other areas of the country in how this station WCBS-FM (being personality driven oldies/greatest hits, etc.) attracted and held listeners for years on end.
Its also connected to the 2002-2005 CBS situation where experts similar to some on this board believed the station always needed to be forced through a deflavorizing cold hard formula of average american demographic analysis. All those MBA's blowing it because they learned in school that CBS just had to fit these unwavering printed numbers. Can't average the country's tastes, and ram it into NY. We're not the same.
Hence the lamentation I've personally seen on the streets and read on this board about the hole created by axing the 50's and early 60's in one swell foop. And now - super positive reaction here on the board to this Heart of Rock & Roll stuff finally playing 1 50's song an hour.....................
All except the experts here - as in 2002-2005 - truly believe the ad men think the 50's are yesterday & completely dead, cut&dried, trite, over, period. And are completely baffled as to how they could actually have put these songs on CBS so soon since it is written that average middle american young demos will immediately not stick around. This..uh..might be wrong here in NY.
Hopefully its mostly just the couple of experts on this board, and David Hinckly. Hopefully the ones in control at WCBS are listening to their fan mail instead with a better, improving understanding of HOW NY is different.
