I think it's a combination of the fact that this board attracts people who are intensely passionate about their interest/hobby (or in some cases, career), and the fact that Allan does a great job of guiding the board. I am sure that Allan has to delete posts, at least sometimes, when people write things that are inappropriate or unnecessary.
The reason most message boards turn into messes that are oftentimes not even worth reading is because there is no true moderation and people who "flame" are allowed to disrupt discussion without any problem.
Lastly, I think it also reflects the type of people this board attracts. For example, if you take a look at a message board for any popular TV show (like American Idol), you'll see countless innane and repetitive posts by fans of all ages. Ironically, the fact that this board attracts an older demographic group is also likely a huge reason things are the way they are. Not to make generalizations, but I think younger people (particularly immature kids) are more likely to be the ones who try to disrupt things or cause problems. That said, there are plenty of kids and young people who are valuable to forums and provide great opinions (I am in my mid-20s, so I'm certainly not biased against young posters!).
