It's ironic how wide-ranging in eras the 'image' claims appear to go. A few days ago there was a series of posts about the OLDER end being stigmatized by the image of the times. (Didn't seem to be any lack of response to Happy Days, Grease, and American Grafitti but that's another topic). I submit that at the younger end of 101's reach, the music is close to getting whatever MTV-image and niching stigma exist.

By default argument, if WCBS-FM once played 80's snoozers by Whitney Houston as part of its core presentation, then an uptempo song from the same era has got to be an improvement strictly in a subsitutional sense. I'm kinda partial to 'Angel' and 'Dress You Up' by Madonna, and agree that she should and will be played.

How much play?

Depends on the time of day ... perhaps on one Trend instead of all three ... the weekend or weekdays : Anything that points one way or another with the ratings responses coming in. But have no doubt that a name as big as hers (and of Michael Jackson) has undergone *much* scrutiny in the music meetings.

WCBS-FM has its work cut out with this expanded reach. Thing is, it's fun hearing them actually work at the variety instead of just saying they are.
