WABC had the songs on their playlist broken down into segments (eg..each song was in a different category).
For the top 3, #1 would come up every hour, #2 every 70 minutes, #3 every 80 minutes (this frequency changed over the course of the years). Thy had a light that flashed to remind the dj it was time or one of the top 3 songs to play.
DJs were alowed to play any song they wanted as long as it was within the category called for in the format rotation.

On the playlist below, starred cuts were the most popular recent hits that the program director wanted played most frequently.
"A" songs were current songs. Colors referred to oldies and some playlist songs.
