When I was WALL in Middletown, NY, in the 70s, we had a similar system - except that we were actually playing 45s (not songs on carts). We had a little bit of leeway within the regular format (for instance, to get the timing up to the news on the hour right), but we still had to pick from songs that were in the category called for in the format sheet. The oldies were also the actual 45s in almost all cases, but they were also on a rotation system (though they were repeated much less frequently than current hits). Each of the 45s had the intro time, song length, and type of ending (fade-out or "cold" ending) written on it.
