You could call me a new listener. I'm 53, was a big fan of the Sklar 77WABC of the late 60s, then got into the more "progressive" sounds of WABC-FM/WPLJ and WNEW-FM in the later 60s and early 70s. Since then have grown less interested in music radio as the consultants have made it all bland, repetitious and boring.
I was never a fan of the old WCBS-FM because I wasn't that interested in '50s music and found the repetition of even my favorite pop hits from the 60s (and later, the awful pop hits of the 70s) boring. I'd tune in now and then, especially when Ingram was on weekend afternoons, for a little nostalgia. But I didn't mourn its passing. I rather liked Jack's eclectic music mix, but not the robotic feel of it.
The new WCBS-FM is definitely the most interesting sound on the dial right now. I'm frankly not crazy about Bill Lee's style but Bob Shannon is an easy listen and Pat St. John is terrific. (I'm not a morning listener, haven't heard Dan Taylor yet.) There's enough variety to ward off the boredom and the energy level is great. Will all of that last, or will it become stale and predictable as the novelty wears off? We'll see.
