For me, there are two things that make hearing the 80s music sound good on CBS-FM.
First, the song selection is good. It just feels like it belongs. I'm not enough of a musicologist, if that's even a word, to describe why some songs work and others don't. But the music mix feels fine to me. I was preparing to willingly cringe during the 80s songs as the cost to have the rest of CBS-FM back, but I haven't had to do that. The songs are great.
Second, the depth of the pre-80s music is tremendous. That helps compensate for any more-modern music that is played, because the total is still mostly oldies, and great ones at that.
Finally, the rest of the CBS-FM brand is completely intact. The talent, the jingles, the personality, the energy, the talk-ups -- it all contributes to the CBS-FM feel, and is invaluable to creating a positive overall takeaway, which the inclusion of some 80s songs can't really diminish.
With all this, I can see why the way CBS-FM is adding 80s music is not hurting the station overall, and is helping to gain a younger audience.
