Larry, you are right. When you are trying to broadcast a more "mass appealing" format such as is WCBS FM you do have a larger playlist. But it is not an alternative station dedicated to playing songs that were not popular but with a small, eclectic crowd (there is a reason that is called "alternative" ((to what? mainstream))).

To properly evaluate this and put it into perspective two things must be considered; first, how quickly can you burn out even the most desired song by repeats? secondly, why were some song titles on the charts at #1,#2,or #3 while others were not and why did some stay there longer than others?

While playing the snot out of a song will kill it off quickly, so will playing songs that, for the reason they didn't get "top 10" play when they were new will only serve to drive listeners away. You must play those songs, but not in constant rotation (you don't play anything in constant rotation; that's they key to maintaining a "new" sound.)

WCBS will have to be careful not to burn out their play lists, but if the jocks do a good job of making it interesting, and they have enough second tier songs in rotation, they should be OK.

The WCBS jocks are real pros at doing this and if they are given license to do so, will keep this format interesting and fresh.
