Steve, if you are competing with two or three other stations in the market all playing the same thing it might be wise to watch the "fringe" songs and maybe trim off some of that fringe. But in the case of WCBS FM, they are the ONLY show in town and as long as they don't burn out the regulars with too much repeated play and still spice it up with some "fringe" type music mixed in on occasion, and mix it up good, they can get "away" with quie a bit. Your examples are very good; the Edsels to John which ever name he recorded that under both fit, but neither has more weight, musically. (I would prefer Jack and Diane but hey, I'm out of demo anyway!)

What they cannot do is mix things like (I'm making this up so the realists hold your posts)Richie Valens and Funky D Master. Those are like putting battery acid into water (or is it the other way around?) But I have a feeling they know the limits.
