For a while in the mid 80s, maybe in part due to the song "Down Under", you could actually find Vegemite here in the US (specifically, central Illinois) if you looked for it. I bought a jar, but having heard some horror stories, was afraid to eat it straight. I spread it on an English muffin and put an egg on top of that-sort of an Aussie Egg McMuffin? It wasn't bad. It definitely had a salty taste, much like anchovies. It's probably an acquired taste.
Always wanted to visit Australia. I knew a girl who spent her senior year there, during the Sydney Olympics, no less, which she did take in, and she had some great stories about the place.
