Sure, those songs were hits. But there are a lot of people out there who won't accept rap, period. And don't you think there's a substantial overlap between that group and the audience for an oldies station, even a "modernized" one? Do you really think adding those three songs would attract more listeners than it would turn off? No way, no how.
It's worth noting that the station is playing the short version of "Red Red Wine" rather than the full-length version (which was what went to number one). Even the reggae "toast" on that song is too much like rap for their listenership.
Hey, if it were me, I'd love to hear "My Myself & I" or "The Breaks" in regular rotation. But if WPLJ can't play rap, it's going to be a long, long time before even the most pop-friendly rap song appears on WCBS-FM or any station like it.
