Interesting question and responses. I think for the most part the very youngest end of their target demo recognizes that tracks like White Lines, The Message, Bust A Move, etc. were a perfectly acceptable and mainstream part of popular music in the '80s. Some may even be nostalgic for 80's rap compared to "today's profanity-laced misogynistic" hip-hop. The fact is groups like Public Enemy, Run DMC, De La Soul etc. made some very good records in the 80's, not just "noise". There's a generation that thought all rock and roll was just noise, too.

That said, the problem is that popular music began fragmenting more than ever around the time rap records started to sell, even more so than with disco, and most of the demo CBS-FM is going for simply doesn't want to hear any rap.

For similar reasons, although The English Beat and The Ramones were mentioned in the "We Didn't Start The Fire" knock-off CBS-FM played, don't expect Dan Taylor to play "Beat On The Brat" any time soon.

Maybe Pat St. John though:)
