Allan...
Although I feel you're missing the point, I'll speak just for myself and not make it a universal.
I embrace what CBS-FM is doing and enjoy the "new" station. In fact, I listen now way more than I ever did in the past.
I like music from the 50's right through today's music. But I understand that in listening to CBS-FM, I should not expect much pre-64 music just as I know I won't be hearing music from the '90's and '00's. Or classical, or country, or heavy metal, for that matter.
I AM very open-minded of the station changes and format.
Last night was a whole different thing. The way the show was promoted and marketed, and the expectations given (as evidenced by the listener response here and elsewhere) led listeners to believe something else was coming.
The concept of re-constructing a show from archived bits and pieces is interesting and probably could work, but should have been promoted differently.
Compare last night to Rewound on WABC, for example. From the first year of Rewound, WABC made it clear what listeners were getting. And the anticipation and reaction was overwhelmingly positive. No one expected to hear Dan, Harry, Ron, Herb and the others "live" doing a show, even though many of them were around and active at the time.
So if CBS-FM wants to do a show like last night's, call it a "Sunday Night Tribute" or the like, promote as such, and off you go!
But last night was kind of like walking into a "Homemade Ice Cream" store and then being handed a 1/2 gallon of Borden's.
