>>>"Based on the promotion of the "*New York* Radio Greats" show, I expected a live DJ, especially because of the statement on the station website."<<<
And that is exactly what the problem with last night's show was - The way the show was promoted raised everyone's expectations up so high that nothing less than a Cousin Brucie, Dan Ingram, Harry Harrison, Ron Lundy, or anyone else of that kind of caliper would have cut it.
All weekend long, the DJ's doing the live promotions pumped it up as nothing short of spectacular - all while keeping us guessing as to who the mystery Radio Great was. The promotion even implied that it was plural - ie. more than one Radio Great.
Yes, if you were to analyze every word used in a court of law, what was delivered (Wolfman Jack in a recreated show from aircheck bits) technically met the definition of what was promoted. The problem with that is that the promotion worked - in fact worked so well that just about everyone who made an appointment to tune in expected much more that what we really got.
Unless the first show delivered one of the above DJ's live, it was destined to fail as a result of it's own promotion success.
In business lingo - the show did NOT exceed anyone's expectations, and fell far short of them based on the promotional hype leading up to the show.
What we heard last night should:
1.) Have been promoted for what it really was.
2.) Not done for the inaugeral show.
3.) Saved for late October when it would have been more seasonally correct and more accepted by the listeners.
Since the WCBS-FM launch I feel that it's been great, and I continue to listen & enjoy. This is nothing more than a little speed bump along the way. Not a big deal in the big picture of CBS-FM's story of coming back. I'm sure minor issues like this will be corrected in the future.
