You're right on target Jeff.

I like the new music mix on CBS-FM but I wonder if it's just a little too rock oriented and too uptempo. Is that just till everyone gets a chance to tune in or will it last a long time?

We've said before that NYC is not a city that likes a lot of rock and roll. Part of the mix, yes. Many folks complained when they heard too many Whitney Houston ballads on the old WCBS-FM. But pop and dance songs that lean neither too rock nor too soft should be the biggest part of the format. And maybe one "Bridge over Troubled Water" or "To Sir with Love" per hour wouldn't be too bad.

The old CBS-FM seemed to aim straight down the middle between women and men. Playing too much rock moves the station too far to the male side.

Then there's also the need to play enough pop and dance for minority listeners. Go too heavy into rock and you lose some black, Hispanic and Asian listeners. The NYC market is roughly split 50-50 between white radio listeners and minorities. If you want to be in the top 10, you better have a good percentage of minority listeners tuning in.

I wonder if the PD is adverse to pop-flavored one-hit wonders? Have we heard "Heaven on The Seventh Floor," "Break My Stride," "Shattered Dreams," "Love Is in The Air" or Robert John's version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"? I did hear Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me" the other day.
