I agree with Allan on this one. I was kind of disappointed last night.
I dutifully tuned in at 7 to hear the Radio Great, expecting some excitement and suspense and fun. Right after the TOH ID, they went right into The Letter by the Boxtops. After that song, I hear a "Randy Davis" jingle (and THAT was how we learned who the Radio Great would be), and then we go right into another song. And then it's two or three more songs before Randy actually starts talking.
I agree with Allan on his appraisal of Randy Davis. He's a nice guy, a real pro, and a pleasure to hear. But, with all due respect, a "great"? Even allowing for some marketing hype, I'm just not sure. He's no Ingram or Brucie or Lundy or HOA or Harry Harrison.
After what I would rate as a disappointing NYRG show last week (to me, anyway; I just never liked Wolfman Jack), this week's show was nothing special at all.
If they are going to keep the Great's identity a surprise until show time (a wonderful and fun idea) then they should have an MC (Rick Stacy?) stick around for a few minutes and introduce him with some fanfare, and a brief bio, and make it more fun and suspenseful. And then let the Great do his own show his way. Otherwise he may not look so great. Remember, not everyone listening will know who the Great is, or why he is considered to be Great.
I believe that the NYRG show should be pretty talky, with the music for some breaks, or to help illustrate an anecdote. Give the Great some freedom! It'll make the show that much more special.
Like many of the readers of this Board, I want the NYRG show to be "appointment" radio. Something I'll go out of my way to tune into. So far, at least for me, it hasn't been.
I mean no disrespect to those who are fans of either Randy or Wolfman, and I offer these comments as constructive criticism. If CBS-FM wants NYRG to be event radio, then they should treat it as such.
BTW, one other thing I noticed. Many of the listener phone calls that Rick Stacy used toward the end of his show to promote the NYRG show were the same exact calls he used last week.
