Allan, I understand what you are saying but view this situation differently than you.
I was hugely disappointed by the Wolfman Jack show last week and turned it off before 7:30. I may be biased because I was never a big fan of his but he is certainly not a NY Radio Great, given his brief and less than successful tenure in the market. Plus, most of us were expecting a live DJ (even though we were never promised one).
I like Randy Davis a lot but agree with you that he is not a NY Radio Great and the show was more or less ordinary. However, compared to last week I listened to the entire show. He was on the air live, a former CBS-FM jock and seemed to connect with the audience. That seemed to appease most of us on the board, particularly in light of the level of disappointment over last week's show. The station probably felt compelled to have a live DJ and perhaps Randy was the most accessible on short notice.
I'm still looking for the "Oh, Wow" factor here. Perhaps CBS-FM management thought they would get that with the Wolfman but didn't get the reaction they expected. If the Radio Great won't be live then I'd like to hear someone of the magnitude of Alan Freed, Murray the K or Jocko Henderson.
How do we define a NY Radio Great for the purposes of this show? Is it based on popularity, longevity, format or some other criteria? For example, would some of the former WNEW-FM jocks be considered even though the station's format was almost the antithesis of Top 40 Radio?
Like many other things going on at the station this is a work in progress.
