I think part of the problem with the New York Radio Greats concept is that there simply aren't enough New York Radio Greats to fill a slot week after week, at least not without continually repeating the same people over and over again.
When people think "great" they think of names like Dan Ingram, Cousin Brucie, and Ron Lundy. How many others are there? Harry Harrison. Maybe a few others. In some cases, these DJs may be ill or have no desire to come back to do a show.
I don't see how they could possibly have a live show every week and put on someone that everyone would view as a radio "great." The only way they could do that is maybe have a rotation of the same three or four guys over and over again.
Even if they use the Wolfman Jack concept and use old recordings, they are still somewhat limited. I don't know how many old CBS-FM airchecks they have (I'd assume a fairly large number), but there's only so much airplay you're going to get out of that, too. I distinctly remember reading something saying that it's harder and harder to have a unique Rewound show on Memorial Day, simply because a lot of well known airchecks have been used already. With a show every week, instead of every year, it'd become a lot more difficult.
For the New York Radio Greats show to have longevity, I think you're going to have to see them do new things, because finding someone to host live every week isn't going to be easy. Expanding on the Wolfman Jack concept might work, but again, you run into the problem of a limited number of people you can use.
