Wolfman Jack was a radio great no question, and featuring him in this series of shows makes sense but the very first show! The majority of folks in this market are more familiar with him from "American Graffiti" than they are from his radio work. His 1973-74 show in this market was not well received (for many reasons that were not a reflection on him), and by the time his overnight show hits WNBC in the mid 80's, AM was no longer a stopping place for folks looking for their radio music fix.
The station promotion of the show was such that some listeners thought (expressing those thoughts on this board) that the show would be live and hosted by a radio great popular in this market. The station might have avoided some second guessing by promoting the show for what it was going to be rather than sitting silently while some pretty intense speculation was going on.
I thought Randy did a very good job and it was nice of "The Breeze" management to let him appear, that said I see your point.
The station may have painted itself into a corner on this one, for a variety of reasons the show may not be able to live up to it's billing.
I have an idea I'd like to throw out, how about looking into running the restored series of AT 40 shows that play on XM and see if that might be a better fit for the time slot. The AT 40 classic countdowns might make economic sense and if nothing else the listener would know what they are getting.
