You don't think that happened in the fifties? You think that every hit back then had staying power?
Do you not realize that fans of the big bands would have (and did) say the same things about rock and roll in the fifties? Adults thought rock and roll was a passing fad, and a noxious one at that. They were wrong then, and you're wrong now.
Every era produces memorable hits and forgotten ones.
As for your main point, I would be absolutely shocked if the Top 500 doesn't include "In The Still Of The Night". I don't know why you seem so certain it won't be there. It's not as though the station is playing absolutely no 50s music.
