In 1940 Ed Murrow broadcast to New York from a London burning and wounded. Those radio reports played no small part in keeping Our Capital and Country Free.
"I have been walking tonight - there is a full moon, and the dirty-gray buildings appear white. The stars, the empty windows, are hidden. It's a beautiful and lonesome city where men and women and children are trying to snatch a few hours sleep underground." (Ed Murrow reporting)
The images of tear-stained, mud covered faces in Lower Manhattan brought back terrible memories of the East End of London and The Blitz when our continent went mad for a time.
Prime Minister Tony Blair has stated that We Stand Shoulder to Shoulder With You. Thank God for That. There are reports that the British Armed Forces will be put at the disposal of The President of The United States of America.
Read that again. I believe it is unique. If true, and I hope and pray it is, I feel we are doing something to help you all at this hour.
You have had to suffer War in the 21st Century. Please understand that when my family sat together last night that as far as possible we shared the tears, fear and suffering with you.
