Gerry, I may've mentioned here before that an industry buddy (late 1960's) declared perhaps thirty years ago that once a format clock is up and the positioners set and the songs selected and the bumperstickers stuck, that a PD's job is done and he should just do show prep for his own air shift and be concerned when someone comes down with the 48-hour Plague and a replacement is needed. Ironically, he WAS the PD at the time, at a very successful station, and was doing a show that got a 17 nighttime share -- without him using an air name of any kind for the entire book as his own experiment. The guy had chops.

I also insist that the enthusiasm is there for current programmers and jocks; the sophistication is there and the requisite cynicism is there, for current and future music PDs. The product isn't there, though.
