The reason almost always given for that was that CBS-FM had a deeper playlist. That was true and I addressed that point in my original post.

The reason, as I said, was the station had no competition. It was free to add anything it chose to without concern that a direct competitor would benefit from listeners tuning out music they didn't know or was too old. If you read my comments you will also see that I said that was a good thing.

But it doesn't mean it was great programming. This was no WPLJ/Z 100 1986 type of competition where a direct competitor was going to benefit from any miscue. Anytime a station with a solid format has the field to itself, it can get away with almost anything. Consider today's WLTW. It too has one of the broadest formats of any AC station in the country.
