But as I pointed out with the WFAN example, ratings and revenue don't alwaya head in the same direction. If any of the oldies stations you cited had a lower ad load than CBS-FM, they could double McCoy's best book and still not make the money he did. The Ticket in Dallas has a higher rating than WFAN in NYC. Do they touch WFAN's billing? No way. Why does Infinity always defend Stern but hung O+A out to dry? Because Stern makes money hand over fist compared to what O+A brought in. Heck, Infinity leaves WXRK alone the rest of the day because of how much money they generate from Stern in the morning.
My point is, upper management looks at the billing before the ratings. Profitable stations have the freedom to do what they want, not necessarily the top-rated stations.
