And that you even asked the question is the issue. The "average listener" doesn't care (your hypothesis) because he or she doesn't have any idea what a good personality can bring to the table. You might as well be suggesting that a robot can deliver the news on TV or that The Late Show doesn't need David Letterman.
People can only respond to things they know about. We've dumbed down radio so much that fewer and fewer people even know what they're missing.
