I'm not sure if this was mentioned previously, but format has a lot to do with it.
If you recall, WABC played so many different kinds of songs. No matter what was a hit, it played on WABC. A format like that today is difficult to do, because of the specialization and fragmentation. I would think there would be a huge tune-out factor nowadays, amongst people UNLIKE us.
