You can't assume that everyone in the same demo is going to listen to the same thing.
The "demo" that ONLY listens to Hot 97 sure isn't going to sample 101.9 and vice versa ... but for a lot of people, you should be surprised how varied their tastes are.
Most people scan through the dial until they find a song that clicks with them....and listen for a while. If the station plays more songs that click, they may set the station as a preset (either on the radio or in their head).
Take a look at their record/tape collections, or even the files on their little MP3 players. Or sit down next to a 20-something in the subway who's blasting the earplugs. You'll hear some hiphop going into rock, going into reggaeton, going into so more rock....going into merengue...
