You're right to compare it to WNEW-FM (the progressive rock version). It seems to have the same kind of idealistic anti-establishment attitude.

But keep in mind a lot has changed in the last forty years. First and foremost is that FM is no longer a second class band that only a few people with new radios listen to. It's now the dominant band and, as such, the stations on it are shackled to things like ratings and billing. WNEW-FM didn't face that in those days. In fact, it could spit in AM radio's face without concern. WRXP can't. It's owned by a company that needs its station at 101.9 to make money--lots of it. Emmis specifically stated they dropped Jazz because it wasn't billing well enough.

This would be a great format for HD-2. That's where you can draw an analogy to the early days of FM radio. Of course, that means investing money into a technology that few people are paying attention to. Thus far, no one seems willing to.
