I believe that Amp Radio in Los Angeles is a reasonably similar CBS Radio CHR, which launched a few months earlier. Yet it is doing very well- I believe it is #4 there. So could 92.3 Now's mediocre showing be more specific to the different market situations?
Also, 92.3 just does not seem to bring much to the table. It has an extremely tight playlist, even by CHR standards. I do not think they play any recurrents, let alone songs that are more than a few months old. Very little current pop that is not urban or rhythmic sounding. No rock hits. Furthermore, WKTU went more current shortly before Now launched, and plays much of the same stuff. Hot 97 and Power 105 also play many of the same tunes, not to mention Z 100.
It does seem that in this market, there are more FM stations than music formats which are in high demand. So it seems inevitable that there will be flips to talk formats such as sports.
