I think you nailed it in that one phrase " You can't out-iPod and iPod".
It seems to me that if there is to be a resurrection of radio, it must be spoken-word driven. With a minimum of interference between speaker and listener. For my money, the less filters the better.
It is a curious time now, when business is horrible and has been for quarter upon quarter. Ever expanding-technology that dominates tme spent, not necessarily "time spent listening" particularly younger people (tomorrow's consumers)and the older demos that seem to still like radio but that are shunned by Madison Avenue. On top of all this, operators on the brink of bankruptcy and no money/buyers for those highly leveraged stations.
What's ahead? Who the hell knows...
