OK, so now I'm really going to date myself.
One of my favorite Gates consoles was the tube version of the Gates "Yard". I worked with a number of them over the years and, when properly maintained, the audio was very good. It was also a great board for combo use on a Top 40 station.
The "improved" solid state version sounded awful.
