Yes, the record labels do have to do more. But they are stuck in a quandry as well because they DO have the material out there, but how could their songs get exposure if radio isn't giving it to them? Do we even mention the "p" word here?
That's why I bring up the AnnaGrace example because her latest track just spells commercial CHR play (for the record, I don't represent her, her label nor her management group) and should get the nod right along side Cascada, who is on the charts now.
But if we are going to base things on sales, Robbins, Nervous and Ultra (the big dance labels) can show the statistics on the sales/downloads of their material. They would know this more than I could.
Yes, you have older dance fans such as myself. However, I did attend a college party (the promoter wanted me there to see that aspect). Aside from the rhythmic, hip-hop and reggaeton being played, there was current edgy dance there. People didn't bolt the floor when a dance track came up. It may be an early indicator but I do believe that there could be a possible dance audience out of the 18-22 college student.
My biggest uphill battle with the Top 40 push is that I am going to be dealing with areas of the country that still think of dance as "gay" music ("gay" being the negative stereotype) as well as areas where the "Footloose" mentality still exists. It will be the challenge...and I'm not going to fight it here. It's going to happen out there :).
