"And if "Death Metal" was as hugely popular as dance music, then why not?"
I am not a fan of Death Metal or Dance music, so I have no stake in this, but Death Metal is popular with a certain audience and so is Dance music. But unless a track from either genre crosses over to mainstream CHR due to the fact that it is selling well, testing well, generating requests, etc... than the song doesn't belong in the format. If you feel that successful CHR stations should be testing grounds for out-of-format music, you are wrong.
"Another note, dance IS "pop" in Europe. Stations there play the music alongside everything else."
So what? In latin America the radio stations play various forms of Spanish music, some of which is considered "Pop" there. Does that mean some of these tracks should be played on CHR stations in the United States?
"What is the underlying fear here?"
There is no fear. This is simply a programming discussion.
