So maybe as Woody Allen says, much of success is simply showing up. Or in the case of successful radio stations, keep showing up doing what listeners expect you to be doing, whether that's being "lite" or "oldies" or "classic rock."
As much as I hate to admit it, that means you can fire your entire fulltime DJ staff as Lite did over a three- year period (except for Robin Taylor who died) and you're still #1.
Or switch to Jack for two years, then return to playing The Beatles, The Supremes and Elvis (even if you don't call it "oldies") and you're #2. One store I know, Grey's Papaya on Broadway & 72nd, never changed their dial!
We talk plenty about what struggling radio stations can do to improve their ratings. I think these ratings say very clearly, in NYC radio, familiarity trumps experimentation...to both WRXP and WOR among others. (Maybe in other markets that isn't true.)
And to successful NY radio stations the message is: Don't just do something, stand there!
