I'll repeat and add to what I put on the thread below.
WBZ, Boston and WBZA, Springfield had "synchronous operation," so my old QSL card says, between the two stations both operating on the same frequency, 1030 (when I listened). They did this from 1926 to 1962 when Westinghouse bought WINS in New Your and WBZA was felled by the "rule of 7."
I work in Europe now and synchronous operation was common here for stations wanting national coverage from one frequency.
With satellite connections and modern electronics I would think phasing stations for synchronous operation would be easier than it was in 1926. The question, would the cost be worth it? Would the FCC permit it? There is a precedent.
